Hungarian Honey Bread Cookie Recipe (Mezes Pogacsa)

Here is my grandma's Hungarian Honey Bread Cookie Recipe. Me and my siblings make these cookies every year with my grandma around Christmas time. But they taste great year-round!

Ingredients for the dough:

  • 760-gram(6 cups) flour

  • 340-gram(2.5 cups) powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • Cinnamon and cloves to taste (around 2 tsp each)

  • 50-gram(about 3 tbsp + 1sp) margarine

  • 4 eggs

  • 4 tablespoon honey

Instructions to make the dough:

  1. Mix everything together in a large bowl. Keep in mind, the dough will be very sticky.

  1. Wrap with plastic wrap and let chill in the fridge for at least an hour (this part is optional, but your cookies will turn out better if you do this).

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

  1. Then use lots of flour to roll out your sticky dough to about ¼ - ½ inch thick.

  1. Cut the cookies out in whatever shapes you desire.

  1. Egg wash the cookies, so they are shiny when they come out of the oven.

  1. Bake the cookies for about 10 minutes in your 350-degree oven until they are golden

Ingredients for decorating:

This part is optional

  • 1 egg white

  • 150-200 gram(1 cup-1.5 cups) powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp lemon juice(optional)

Instructions for decorating:

  1. Place all of your ingredients in a bowl.

  1. With a mixer or whisk, mix together the ingredients until they form soft peaks(Careful to not get powdered sugar everywhere) Then you are ready to ice the cooled cookies.

  1. Place the icing in a piping bag with a small tip or in a plastic bag with one corner cut off.

  1. Ice the cookies in whatever patterns you desire.

And you are done! Enjoy your cookies! :)
